The General Practitioner is responsible for the health and general well being of the townsfolk of Tom Price and the surrounding areas. This includes the full-time surgery center and sharing after hours' emergency care. Skills in all the areas of medicine are required with opportunities to develop further skills as appropriate. It is the doctors responsibility to provide a visiting service to the local 8 bed hospital which includes inpatient and outpatient care.

Clinical Duties
The G.P. is expected to have a well rounded knowledge and experience in general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, emergency and occupational medicine. Minor surgical skills such as the removal of lesions, suturing and vasectomies are required. Experience in Antenatal care essential

Support
Specialists and paramedical backup include : Regular visiting Gynecology, Orthopedics, Pediatric, Surgical and Ophthalmology specialists. Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Child Health, Radiology and a laboratory are all on site with a visiting OT and Audiologist.

Facilities
Tom Price Medical Center has been run by Dr Sheryl Thrussell for the last twelve years. During this time the center has been fully refurbished and updated. We now enjoy a large modern center with two consulting rooms and a treatment room. We enjoy new medical equipment which includes ECG, Ultrasound, Hyfracator, Slit Lamp and Liquid Nitrogen. Sterilization of equipment is all catered for on the premises. We are computerized for accounts and script writing. The practice was fully re-accredited in October 2003 with excellent reviews.

Work Realities
The position offered is for a full time G.P. The position involves approximately 7-8 hours of consulting time per day and we endeavor to ensure one hours' lunch break. The doctor is expected to see 4 to 5 patients per hour with the ability to be flexible on busy days and with hospital emergencies. Paperwork and follow up phone calls is expected to be done in this time or completed in the doctors own time. Also required are daily ward rounds of the inpatients, which can be anything from 0-8 patients. The surgery is open on Saturday mornings for an emergency clinic.

The on call arrangements are one in two with a roster to suit both parties. Each doctor needs to be flexible and willing to cover each other in times of illness, family emergency and holidays. Locums are obtained for holidays on most occasions. The on call load is variable, however it is rare to be called out after midnight. On average it might be two or three calls per night, however not all calls result in having to attend the hospital.
