FAQ's - HELP

Will my qualifications be recognised in Australia?

You are either: A General practitioner, Specialist or Hosptial medical officer.
RAD will give you guidance to achieve the best outcome. There are a number of factors and a step by step approach is generally required.

  1. Nsw Medical Baord of Australia:Temporary Limited Registration Requirements
  2. AMC - Australian Medical Council:
  3. Hospital Drs must complete the AMC exam / AMC Certification
  4. English language proficiene must be proven by all drs: IELTS -or- High School English

Australian Drs are well trained by international standards*GP Consulting in Australia
In recruiting to Australia we find that we often recruit drs who are 'overqualified' for the position. This is done for a number of reasons:
   - It gives the recruiting hospital confidence.
   - It avoids the incoming dr finding themselves embarrassed by being out of their depth.
   - More highly qualified Drs may have initial deficiencies but learn the new skills rapidly.
   - It is a model with more advantages than disadvantages.

Having an opportunity to work in the Australian Health Care system is of great benefit, and enables you to learn the system and work towards specialist recognition while working.

If you wish to become an Australian specialist this will take time and patience.

Earning a great reputation from the outset will stand you in very good stead at a later date.

I have completed Specialist Studies - Why is the job offered not specialist ?

The single problem which we encounter is that drs who have studied hard overseas aspire to the equivalent 'specialist status' in Australia. This is an important area.

The specialist colleges in this country are very protective and put in place robust systems to assure that those who receive Australian specialty recognition are equally well trained to those who graduate in Australia. There is no way around this and neither there should be.

Australian Fellows complete 4 years of sequential written examinations. Universities which give fellowship based on multiple choice exams, or only one exam at the end of the course, are not well regarded.

If RAD has offered or guided you towards a non specialist position, it is because your current qualifications (at this point in time) will not be recognised by the Royal College in Australia.

4
Can I Apply for Assessment of My Specialist Qualifications? GUIDELINES

Yes, at any time you are able to apply offshore for recognition, and we encourage you to do this. There is a charge, but the sooner this process begins the faster we can find you a position.

If we are able to find you a position before specialist assessment has occurred then normally the hospital sponsor will pay for the assessment application, which varies

Assessment Application fees:
AMC ( Aust Medical Council) AUD $250

Royal College fees vary $250 to $4,400 depending upon with RC is involved

Our Specialist Guidelines provide all the relevant information and links to get started.

5
How Long Does The Assessment Take ?

Unusually 2 months if RAD is involved
2 - 8 months or more is application is made personally offshore.

6
Can I work in The City once I get Permanent Residency?

As an overseas Dr. working in an Area Of Need, You will NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES be able to move to the city is under 10 years, due to the ruling called " The 3GA 10 Year moratorium.

The only exception to this is if there is an "Area Of Need " position in the city.

7
What are My Prospects?

Our advice is to 'get a foot in the door', get started.

Get a good job and then take a 1-2-3 year view of locking in permanent residence.

Once you make a commitment to the position and prove yourself to be high caliber, hard working and pleasant to work with, you will find that the large majority of Australians will lean over backwards to help you succeed.

If you choose to stay on after 2 years and your medicine is good (which we expect it to be.)
RAD can assist you in finding a position, but expect that your contract would be extended, if agreeable by both parties.

RAD wants to recruit high quality Health professionals who want to contribute to country communities for 5 - 10 years and then consider either staying in the country or following children to big centers of education.
