Can I change jobs if I see something better elsewhere ?

The visa which you will be granted, is specifically linked to your employer sponsorship. In the majority of case you will not be allowed to move employers without first considering your visa. We strongly advise all doctors to carefully read the conditions of their visa.

Medical Practitioner
Temporary stay of suitably qualified medical practitioner where there is a demonstrated need to employ practitioners from overseas Sponsorship is required regardless of the period of stay
You must not breach condition 8107 *

* Condition 8107 states:
Condition of your subclass 422 visa is that you must not change employer. You must not also undertake other employment. If you wish to change employer or occupation you must apply for a new visa beforehand. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of your visa and removal from Australia of you and any family members.

On your visa sponsorship letter, will be written:
If something changes

Approval for stay as a temporary resident is conditional upon the visa applicant's continued employment with your organisation, in the position specified on the sponsorship form. The visa applicant must not change employer in Australia without first obtaining the written approval of this department. If the visa applicant breaches this condition the visa maybe cancelled.

3
Can my spouse also work on this visa?

The visas we use grant the spouse and other family members the same working rights as the applicant. You do not normally need a separate visa for other family members, unless they are independent children over 18.

4
How long does my visa last ?

Medical Practitioner visas can be issued for 4 years, if agreed by the employer. This can be extended if needed. However, 4 years is usually sufficient to enable a doctor to complete fellowship and apply for permanent residency.

Nursing, public hospital doctors and allied health professionals are issued a 4-year long-stay business visa.

5
Can I apply for permanent residency?

Doctors & specialists should aim for fellowship / unconditional medical registration in the first instance. If you are private-billing (i.e. Most GPs and specialists) it is essential that you talk to us about the implications on your provider number.

Nursing and allied health professionals are generally issued with unconditional registration by their respective registration board and therefore can apply for permanent residency after after probationary periods has been successfully completed, and both parties are happy to continue.

6
Do I need an employer sponsorship for permanent residency?
Not necessarily, but it is MUCH quicker than skilled migration and slightly more flexible on criteria. Your employer must be your sponsor in order to apply for PR.
7
What does permanent residency application cost ?

Please see DIMIA Fees
