AWARD CLASSIFICATION: Staff Specialist or Visiting Medical Officer


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Basic medical degree(s)
Fellow of the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists or equivalent
Registration as a Medical Practitioner in NSW

HOURS OF WORK: As per Award 40 hrs $ 5,000 per wk base salary

ACCOUNTABLE TO: General Manager GMAHS
Medical Superintendent (clinical issues)

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: To provide a high quality anaesthetic service to both inpatients and outpatients and to participate in the management of unstable and ventilated patients in the intensive care unit
DETAIL OF DUTIES:

Clinical Duties

  1. Provide routine and emergency anaesthetic services.
  2. To assist in the management of unstable and ventilated patients in ICU.
  3. To participate in the after hour anaesthetic and ICU roster.
  4. Supervision of non specialist medical staff in relation to anaesthetic services.
  5. Be responsible for the efficient running of the pre-admission clinic.
  6. Be responsible for premedication rounds and post operative follow up.
  7. Provide epidural analgesia for patients in labour, when requested.
  8. Develop and maintain relationships with tertiary anaesthetic institutions and facilities.
  9. Provide such other clinical services as may be necessary and appropriate to the speciality.
  10. Attendance at resuscitations through out the hospital when on call

Administrative and Educational Duties
Ensure the administrative duties relating to the proper functioning of the department and the hospital are carried out.
Provide and participate in educational activities for:

1. Resident medical staff
2. Medical students
3. Postgraduate nurses
4. Undergraduate nurses
5. Paramedical staff (including ambulance staff)
6. Interested community groups
  • Ensure and review quality of patient care by participating in peer review and quality assurance programs.
  • Maintain personal knowledge and skills and participate in continuing medical education.
  • Contribute to advisory services to hospital committees, Health Department and other organisations.
  • Attend and contribute to conferences, research and other educational activities relevant to rural anaesthetic and intensive care services as determined in consultation with the Director Medical Services.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT

  • Provide a satisfactory record of continuing education, sufficient to confirm awareness of major advances, potential complications and significant technology changes in the speciality.
  • Be actively involved in the Quality Management program.
  • Establish performance goals, in consultation with Director Medical Services, within three months of appointment and negotiate twelve monthly thereafter.

CONFIDENTIALITY & CODE OF CONDUCT AND ETHICS

  • Maintain confidentiality by ensuring no information concerning patients or clients is divulged or discussed with persons outside the Medical Service or within the Medical Service if the person is not involved in the treatment of the patient (except in recognised clinical meetings.)
  • Be familiar with the contents of the GMAHS & New South Wales Health System Code of Conduct and Ethics and observe their provisions

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

  1. The staff specialist award allows for doctors to use the right of private practice to supplement the income. There are 5 different levels of the rights of private practice from no private practice ($166,000) per annum to up to 175% of the salary ($242,000). The award is quite complex in regard to the arrangements.
  2. Training, Education and Study Leave (TESL) to the value of $25,662 per annum (accrues up to 2 years)
  3. Study leave of 25 working days
  4. Annual Leave of 25 working days
  5. Sick leave of 10 working days
  6. Superannuation at 9% of salary (base) from 1/7/2002
  7. There is also provision for a specialist to work completely independently of the hospital for up to 25% of the time (with a prorata drop in benefits)
  8. Subsidised the accommodation for up to 3 months until you decide upon the type of housing you prefer - wide range available in this area from cottage & flats to small farms.
  9. Removal expenses upon negotiation up to $20,000. The first $10,000 payable after 12 months services and the remaining $10,000 after a further 12 months service.
  10. First pay will come 2 weeks after commencement of duties.
