AWARD CLASSIFICATION: Staff Specialist / VMO

HOURS OF WORK: Negotiable

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Director of Medical Services

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: To provide a high quality anaesthetic service to both inpatients and outpatients of the Macquarie Area Health Service, and to participate in the management of unstable and ventilated patients in the intensive care unit.

DETAIL OF DUTIES:

Clinical Duties

  1. Provide routine and emergency anaesthetic services.
  2. To assist in the management of unstable and ventilated patients in ICU.
  3. To participate in the after hour anaesthetic and ICU roster.
  4. Supervision of non specialist medical staff in relation to anaesthetic services.
  5. Be responsible for the efficient running of the pre-admission clinic.
  6. Be responsible for premedication rounds and post operative follow up.
  7. Provide epidural analgesia for patients in labour, when requested.
  8. Develop and maintain relationships with tertiary anaesthetic institutions and facilities.
  9. Provide such other clinical services as may be necessary and appropriate to the speciality.
  10. Attendance at resuscitations through out the hospital when on call

Administrative and Educational Duties

  • Ensure the administrative duties relating to the proper functioning of the department and the hospital are carried out.
  • Provide and participate in educational activities for:

    1. Resident medical staff
    2. Medical students
    3. Postgraduate nurses
    4. Undergraduate nurses
    5. Paramedical staff (including ambulance staff)
    6. Interested community groups

  • Ensure and review quality of patient care by participating in peer review and quality assurance programs.
  • Maintain personal knowledge and skills and participate in continuing medical education.
  • Contribute to advisory services to hospital committees, Health Department and other organisations.
  • Attend and contribute to conferences, research and other educational activities relevant to rural anaesthetic and intensive care services as determined in consultation with the Director Medical Services.
General Duties
  • Provide a satisfactory record of continuing education, sufficient to confirm awareness of major advances, potential complications and significant technology changes in the speciality.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT
  • Be actively involved in the Quality Management program.
  • Establish performance goals, in consultation with Director Medical Services, within three months of appointment and negotiate twelve monthly thereafter.


CONFIDENTIALITY & CODE OF CONDUCT AND ETHICS

  • Maintain confidentiality by ensuring no information concerning patients or clients is divulged or discussed with persons outside the Medical Service or within the Medical Service if the person is not involved in the treatment of the patient (except in recognised clinical meetings.)
  • Be familiar with the contents of the MAHS & New South Wales Health System Code of Conduct and Ethics and observe their provisions
